As a Hungarian I also think that we are lamenting too much on our hardships and did not face with our past at all. Also didn't try to think about our history except for accepting it not glorius and blaming others for it. This is the first real attempt to get rid of this mentatlity and try to rebrand the concept of our History.2006-10-20 04:47
I am a Hungarian-American woman (raised here with Hungarian parentage) who was made aware of the billboards today after an NPR piece. With some curiosity I found this site. I too have a question. In theory it is wonderful to keep the story in history alive but I am curious what the objective is. What exactly is the message and how is it part of a grander plan for Hungary's image abroad. I have spent years in Hungary, both as a resident and visiting, and know that Hungarians have a meloncholic way of hanging on the past by lamenting it and their hardships. It does become....annoying. So what will this achieve in a positive light?2006-10-20 00:09
I think the money should have been spent on something more meaningful.2006-10-04 21:49
Hi all. I am hungarian as well but I disagree with attacking people that left the country in those hard times. As a matter of fact, anybody that could do it, did it. Part of my family left, part of it stayed for personnal reasons. But it doesn't make a difference, both parts are my family, they're neither heroes, nor cowards. I've never been proud of hungarian patriotism. Truth to be told, hungarians abroad either ignore their roots and turn around when bumping into another hungarian or stick together into rather extremist nationalist "associations" which is pretty contradictory. These are only the words of a hungarian citizen that lived several times abroad. Hungarians are not famous of being a welcoming nation and time has come for this to change. Advertising a historical event can be discussed. My personal opinion is that Hungary is desperatly in need of positive advertisment. And '56 is a very good message. A message that hungary never let itself undertaken by dictatorship. A message that this is all history now, but try of understand them, because communism was part of people's life... A message that we might have made bad choices in history but overall we are a courageous, strong nation. And please, don't even try to make a link between '56 and today's riots. What happens in Hungary now is NOT a revolution. It is the violent and aggressive demonstration of football hooligans and nationalist youth. A minority that in no way expresses the opinion of a nation. While living in NY, I was wondering on many occassions about Times Square. I thought that it was just the center of globalisation, the top of the globalised world. But now, for the first time, I fell that it is used for noble purposes...2006-09-23 20:01
Hi Roman! I'm a Hungarian and I don't really understand what the message is. I mean, what could it be in New York where a large amount of people don't even know where Hungary is. And to admit the truth, the so called '56 refugees annoy me terribly! They always complain about their situation, that they had to leave the country and that they were never happy outside their homeland. Yet, most of them never tried to come home after '89 to live in their "sweet homeland". They always talk about the terrible things they had to experience. They talk about themselves as some kind of heroes. But what about those who never tried to escape? Those who stayed here to fight or to face the consequeces? The prison, the torturing, the constant threat of being hanged. Or worse, being released after long years of imprisonment into a world in which they cannot trust anyone.2006-09-23 19:21
I am Polish and was pleasantly surprised by your idea to advertise the anniversary of the '56 protests. What is the final purpose of the campaign? Is is to raise the profile of Hungary by advertising a strong, politically charged message, ie the fight for freedom and democracy? Do you think this will build awareness?
